Calexico Intermodal Transportation

CALEXICO'S INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION CENTER (ITC)

Background Information

Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC), and the City of Calexico conducted a collaborative study to determine the feasibility and preferred location for a new intermodal transportation center near the Calexico West (Downtown) Port of Entry (POE) pedestrian crossing.

Downtown Calexico’s port of entry is one of busiest ports in the nation with an estimated 20,000 pedestrians crossing the border daily into Imperial Valley from Mexico to work, attend school or shop. The number of crossers at the downtown POE is projected to increase with the planned expansion of the international border crossing. Many of those crossers use public transportation to access their final destination and it is anticipated that a new, conveniently located transportation center will better accomodate existing and projected rider demand.  Additionally, it is also expected that a new facility will better serve local riders as well and potentially relieve traffic congestion in the downtown area. The feasibility study was conducted and finalized on October 23, 2014. Project Status

The new Calexico ITC will serve as a regional mobility hub that will accommodate bus bays for Imperial Valley Transit in addition to the City of Calexico’s private transit operators, taxis and farm labor buses. ICTC received a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality federal program fund to complete the environmental and design plans of the new Calexico ITC. ICTC staff is in the process of completing the contract award for a consultant firm that will complete the environmental and design phase. Currently, ICTC staff is completing the Caltrans award review process with multiple Caltrans’ departments. The ICTC Board adopted the agreement with Psomas on September 26, 2018. Environmental phase has been completed. Design is underway and Right of Way Acquisition will begin in Summer 2021.
